"A society is defined not only by what it creates, but by
what it refuses to destroy"
-John Sawhill
Times have
changed and so has the man. Now, he finds everything on his fingertips, be it
knowledge or entertainment. World is often said to be getting smaller as the communication
channels are increasing. Man is engaged within this virtual world for now. The real human however needs more than
this. The basic survival needs, for
example,
fresh air, water and food. Is this a joke or something?? Isn't it the other way round, please. A man needs the basic needs
first, in order to survive. And, are we
taking
them for granted?
Man has evolved here, on this planet, with the
help of this planet but sadly, one cannotsay the next part, "for this
planet". Developments have held up the man to heights which never
seemed accesible however, the entire burden of development and population
explosion has been borne by the planet alone until now. But not anymore. This burden has
now started interfering in every little way that humans interact with the planet. Every
living being is being threatened. Is there any other way to think about this? No, not for
sometime at least.
Man
has been Unknowingly Irresponsible...
Our ancestors had a set lifestyle which
complimented the ecology from varied angles.
Day-to-day living as well as
festivals and celebrations reflected respect and gratitude for nature.
Apart from certain social norms which encouraged divisions, rifts and inequalities
in the society, mankind did not really tamper with nature and it's balance. Thus,
nature was generous with bountiful produce which was full of nutrition, health and
taste. Farm produce was especially planned according to the seasons which meant only
certain foods at certain times. People were strong and led a healthy, happy and inspired
life with an average expectency of about 100 years or more. However, the times
changed.
Western advances gripped the entire
generations together. Lifestyles started changing. Utterly
organic people welcomed entirely artificial products and ways into their lifestyle.
Plastic was accepted in. Strong fertilisers and pesticides made a grand entry into
the farming practices to increase the produce multifold for better profits.
Direct
Consequences of the Above....
Season's are intermingling and losing their
significance owing to varied factors- major
being pollution and it's
effects at several levels, soil has lost it's fertility, farms have lost their
capacities and farmers are losing their livelihood and in certain cases their
lives, too! Farmers are seriously engaged in the painstaking cycle of
toxic produce by the overuse of artificial fertilisers and pesticides. An
immense loss for human kind and living beings! A humongous loss for the mother Earth!
Consumer's are paying higher and higher
costs for their basic water-food-shelter
needs. At the same time,
they are exposed to varied diseases owing to the consumption of
toxic food, so spending more and more on medical services. Irresponsible
ingress of plastic without knowing it's entire features for safe usage and
degradation further intensifying the land disturbances.
Life has lost it's glory! Life has lost it's
worth!
It's
time we come together and work our way....
Every thinking individual is drawn to the
concept of sustainability. He knows that it's the
only way to take the
generation ahead. If he doesn't do it right at this very moment its not
going to be easy for his children, more so, for his grandchildren. It's time he
takes a small but firm step towards sustainable ways.

*Sustainable Living Family aims to be a bridge
between the consumers and farmers who are
aligned with the sustainable principles. Every supplier in the sustainable
living group stands on a strong base of sustainable ways and
practices. However, at this point of time,
consumers have an equal role to play in the development of sustainable methodologies
through their consistent support for this movement.
